Teach First are an educational charity working towards a future when no child’s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background. One way they seek to achieve this in the North East is in collaboration with Northumbria University and a growing network of schools across our region. Teach First participants (all high-calibre graduates) join a Leadership Development Programme which involves achievement of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Qualified Teacher Status in year one, and access to a range of training and development across the two years to help them become excellent teachers. Over the course of the programme, Teach First work in partnership with schools who serve low income communities to close the attainment gap for pupils.
Teach First have been working in the North East since 2011. They are currently looking to recruit more North East Primary schools to increase impact in Key Stages 1 and 2 and build their community of teachers in the region. They have had considerable impact in these phases so far, with Walkergate Primary’s Head Teacher feeding back the following:
“We have been part of Teach First since 2012. During that period, we have had the privilege of working alongside outstanding practitioners. Initially, we were concerned that the recruitment process would not work for us. We wanted to be much more heavily involved in choosing the candidate. I have to say, our fears were completely unfounded. Without exception, every one of our Teach First students has been outstanding. Their commitment and enthusiasm for the profession is wonderful to see. The support the students receive from Teach First and through the partnership with Northumbria University helps secure innovative and highly effective teaching. We share the vision and values of Teach First – the most vulnerable children really do deserve the best teachers. I could not recommend Teach First highly enough.” (Debi Bailey, Walkergate Primary School, Newcastle).
